Part I – “Device not compatible” – Skype on 3

3 advertise all over the place about their free Skype – Skype calls, giving the impression that if you buy a 3 phone, you’ll be given Skype.. right? I have 3 mobiles at home, one ZTE F102 (a 3Skype phone I use for business), one HTC TyTN II (personal) and a Sony Ericsson K800i (collecting dust). The only “out of box” skype compatible phone was the ZTE, and the others I’ve had to mess around with endlessly to get working! (In fairness, the TyTN  II wasn’t a 3 mobile, but they do sell them) It’s very irritating to be told one thing, and then find your were shafted after handing over the green..

I’ve managed to fix both of my devices so that skype is working almost flawlessly, and now that I’ve figured it out, I want to share the knowledge in the hope that it will help others out.

[This post is in two parts.] Wanting Windows Mobile? Go to Part II

Part I – Sony Ericsson K800i (Any java phone)

I’ll start with the Sony Ericsson, I’d never even tried Skype on the K800i as it was just a mobile that appeared out of no-where (I assume I accepted it in return for some favour). However after giving it away (letting my friend know he could Skype for free etc!), I had to take it back in order to fix the lack of Skype support it apparently had. I tried the obvious – went on to the 3 website with it and was promptly told that the device wasn’t supported.. weird seeing as Skype is a java app and the K800i has java built in.

Luckily it was an easy fix, as I said java is fully supported on the K800i so all I needed to do was get the latest version of Skype for 3 devices from another source, copy it to the device and install!
Bare in mind however, I’ve noticed that “not supported” seems to be code for “we haven’t yet written the program for your display settings”, so you may notice Skype displays a little off the screen. I did, but it didn’t make any difference to the functionality and can still be used without any issues.

Here you are, I’ve even uploaded the Skype.jar file for you!

  2. @joy, MegaUpload seems to be working fine for me now. I’ve also uploaded the Skype.jar onto my server (click the box icon in the post!), so you should be able to get it now :)

Let me know how it works for you!

  3. @joy, thank you for sending me the attachment of the 3 Australia Skype version. As you may or may not know, each country has different settings so naturally a 3UK version of Skype will not work with the settings of 3 in Australia (meaning no Skype, even if it installs!)

Hopefully this will help those from Aus wanting it, and if anyone else has a version for their country please let me know!

  4. Hello, thanks for all this. Although I’m not sure if your post is saying that it is impossible to get Skype working if I’m in Aus. Could you clarify please? I have an (unlocked) zte f102 (3 skypephone) from the UK, and although the handset works fine in general, Skype has never worked. It won’t let me install the jar file you have uploaded to your site saying that: “the new version of application cannot be installed. The old version of application is authorized by …The new version is not authorized”. Am I out of luck?! Many thanks..Lefti

    • Hi Lefti,

You’ll have to forgive me, because I created this post for UK users, it was another Australian commenter who provided the .jar file for 3 Australia who told me it worked for her. As she said this, I added it to the site (figuring it’d help more Aussies!)
It is not impossible at all to get Skype working in Aus. You should be able to install that .jar without any problems.

I’ve done a little research, I guess you’ve tried this already.. but if you go to 3.com.au’s Skype page it gives you quite a bit of information, including texting “Skype” to 33 66 99.

Try that, and let me know if you’re still experiencing problems. The ZTE should be supported.

  5. Jason,

Thanks for the advice you offered, much appreciated. I tried texting the number you posted and I was sent a link to download skype which looked promising. Unfortunately, when the link loaded on my phone it told me Skype wasnt available for my phone! The Skype support pages on the 3 site were also unhelpful unfortunately.

I think my best bet will be to install the jar file you posted on the site here, as your Australian commenter got it working for her. Was she using the same handset as me by the way?
I somehow need to trick the phone, maybe in to thinking the version is “authorised”. Remember that the error message I got was “the new version of application cannot be installed. The old version of application is authorized by the new version is not authorized”

Otherwise, if I could uninstall the version that is currently on the phone – then the installation of the file on your page here should run just fine.

That’s where it falls down, as I can’t find a way to achieve either of the above!

If you have any other ideas or pointers, no matter how small – I’d love to hear from you, and many thanks again.

    Lefti

I’m sorry to hear again you’re still having problems. I’ve done a little more research and it appears 3 can flash their phones, this could in effect remove any UK firmware and put the Australian firmware on it. Now I don’t know if this will work, you’ll have to ask 3 for yourself but this link: http://goo.gl/2rE3 shows a mail from a 3 rep offering the service.

The annoying thing is, there’s no record of that error message in any Google search I do, nor anything related to that. There’s a lot of complaints about Skype, but it always works.. just poorly!

Perhaps you can try giving 3 a call, and see if they can offer a flash?
Backup everything on your phone first, flashing often wipes it. But it could be the answer.

Good luck, and keep me informed!

  7. Jason!
I finally seem to have found someone that knows his ways around with this Skypebusiness.
I have an old WP-S1 Skypephone for years now so i have gut used to always be connected to skype. I bought a ZTE F102 this spring just because i googled around and found info, even in Swedish that it was a Skypephone. to my amazement there was no Skype application in it. At least not visible. The problem is that three in Sweden has cancelled its cooperation with Skype and no longer offer skypeservices. they say that You can use skype via dataservices and get software from skype. Whiöle trying to get it they (skype) says that there is no application supporting ZTE F102.
i am going crazy about this? Thanks!

  8. @Swede thanks for your comment!

I’d be curious to know why 3 in Sweden would have cut off their Skype services while the rest of the world can enjoy it as standard..

However, what you need is Skype Lite – this is a now non-supported version of Skype that was discontinued a while back.

A little Googling found this link: http://goo.gl/hs1Q
Softpedia are a great resource for software, you should bookmark it while you’re there! As you can see this version is for Sony Ericsson. This should not really matter, but it may display a little strangely (usually cuts the edges off the screen). I too have a ZTE F102, so if this doesn’t work I’ll do a little research and get back to you when I find a good solution.

This version works on your data plan, rather than through 3′s system so may be a little less reliable than what you’re used to, however it should get you going again.

You’re certainly not going crazy, rather Skype support is pretty awful and as such what they say is often not true (as with 3!).

I hope this helps, if you need any further assistance, please feel free to get in touch!

  9. Thank You Jason!
I will try it out. As You might know, three is a Swedish company, and i got the feeling that the skype cooperation was a way to get customers but it did not work out so well here. Very few Swedes knew about the Skypephone and got one when it came.It was poorly advertised and the “toyish” look of the Amoi WP-S1 did nt help either in the homeland of Sony Ericssons. We did buy three(!!!)(no phun intended) in our family. It was on PAYG and it did work even while two of them didnt charge there cards at all for almost two years. That is, I we could all call each other on Skype for free. I cant say I recall the promises in the ads for 100% but I think You were at least expected to charge Your SIM with approx 50SEK (approx 35 GBP)/ month to keep the Skypeservice going. I meet people almost every weeek that never seen the phone before but when i explain and show how it works they want to get it! A lot of people confuse the term skypephone with some type of WLAN phone that works only with WLAN. Another thing is that at the time they marketed the Skypephone their 3G coverage was not the best in Sweden.

i even called the customer service today and was really pissed of because i only started to be a 3 customer for the sake of Skype and my argument to Customer service was that if they have it in UK,(and Ireland and Australia et.c there must be a way to get the app. to ,my phone by SMS like they do in UK. Their comment was that they where separete companiesand could only say that the cooperation in Sweden with Skype has ended.
It all happened silently and at first, in the spring even customer service where confused and did not know what to say. They did also market skype with alot of other phones, SE and Nokia et.c but that stopped as well. Previously they mentioned the possibility to have it at phones on a data packet plan but now they did not mention it at all. i still use the WP_S1 because the Skype on that works fine and is vert stable. I wanted to buy a ZTE F102 in UK via internet and unlock it before I saw that they sold them here in Sweden.
It is all a mystery. I guess I might as well move on to another operator with better if i have to use the Skype Lite.

The funniest of all is that i got the messages both from skype and iskoot while trying to download Skype to the ZTE F102 that “Sorry Our software does not support Your handset”

  10. HOLD YOUR HORSES!

I have now tried out the SkypeLite app.
i am sorry to say that it is of no use for me. Why?

First, it does ask after installed if I want to recive Skypecalls it will reduce my Skypeout credit?

Second, I loggid in to my skype account, everything fine sofar. all my contacts is there so I must be connected BUT then I cannot make regular calls while still being connected to Skype like in my 3 Skypephone.
I have to close down Skype to make an ordinary phonecall.

Sorry that does not work for me.

  11. Hi @Swede,

Although it says this, it should absolutely NOT use your Skype credit. You can check this yourself by making a Skype call to yourself from another account. I have seen messages like this in the past, but have never been charged.

It sounds like it’s installed and working correctly. Have you tried making a call to someone over Skype? It should use your data only.
I haven’t had the same problem as you with it blocking normal calls, you should be able to bring up the menu and “minimise” it. Does this work?

What I’m especially interested in is your last comment where you stated that Skype on 3 (different to Skype Lite) still works on your other phone, is that correct? If it is, then perhaps if I find a Swedish Skype on 3 java app, it will also work using the 3 network and not your data.

Let me know, and perhaps we can continue this conversation via email save filling up the comments section with troubleshooting the issue.

  12. Its an interesting conversation. I’ve been trying to get skype working on some older 3g phones since April 2011 when three have stopped offering downloads for skype on many handsets. Only some new andriod & other handsets work now.

There is also versions for s60 v5 nokia but I’m not sure if they are still being offered by three. Skype v 1.0.17 no longer works & the message prompts to upgrade which is no longer available for the phone… So unless there is a newer than 1.0.17 which java file which works, then its a tough job to figure out at the moment.

I’ve been collecting installers, Now looking for some working java versions. Particularly skype. It might be of use to some…

    • Thank you for the link and your comment! Would you mind if I added it to the above post? I’ve not really addressed this issue since writing it as I’ve finally upgraded to an Android phone. I left it hoping it could still help others.

It’s a shame to see they’re making it impossible to use the older versions, but I guess it was inevitable due to the way these companies work.
